5 Annoying Things About Every Malaysian’s Daily Commute!

These things need to end, right now.

Another day, another few hours being stuck in soul-crushing traffic. Each day, millions of Malaysians make the commute to work and play, and we can bet that each one of them wishes that somebody invents a teleportation device already.

But, the reality is that science hasn’t advanced enough for instant travel and for the foreseeable future, we still have to put up with these five annoying things about our daily commutes to and from KL city…

#1 Drivers of all sorts

It’s true, even the most timid and polite Malaysian can suddenly turn into the angriest, most kiasu person on Earth when put behind the wheel. These are the people that will drive above the speed limit, tailgate, and cut into your lane without signalling first. Urgh, how annoying.

#2 The mess that is our roads

Driving, cycling, or walking down our roads always feel like we’re trying to navigate through an obstacle course. It’s not just the potholes, we also have to avoid burst tyre pieces, the occasional car bumper, fallen trees, and the poor cat who tried to cross the road but didn’t make it. Rest in peace, kitty.

#3 Sudden closures

Thanks to the forever-going-on road construction in our country, new exits open up as sudden as they close on our roads. So, even if you think you’ve already got a particular road all memorised, it’s a good idea to be alert and listen to that bodiless voice that is the GPS lady (or man).

#4 The suddenly-hot-suddenly-raining weather

Apparently, the only way to be prepared for the weather in Malaysia is to prepare for all types of weather because what looks like a hot, sunny day can suddenly become torrential rain with 100% chance of flooding. At least we know why that tree fell on the road.

#5 The other road users who forget they’re not immortal

Every day is opposite day on the roads of Malaysia because drivers have the habit of texting and driving, motorcyclist weave in and out dangerously between cars, and pedestrians rely on their traffic-stopping palm to halt oncoming traffic, so they can cross whenever and wherever they want. Sigh, you are not Neo from The Matrix, guys.
