With Chinese New Year just around the corner, many of us will be busy with shopping, decorating the house, packing ang-pows etcetera that we forget about one of the most important elements of the celebration, FOOD!

There were days when we waited until the last minute and struggled to book a restaurant or order food at all because every place was already booked! So what do we do? Correct, just order any food that is available at that time without considering much whether the members of the family like it or not, simply because we have no time to.

In case you find yourself guilty of this, we have come up with five tips to help you plan your menu better, thus guaranteeing a happier reunion with fuller stomachs!

1. Check for Allergies!

Your cousin might be allergic to seafood, your aunt might just hate spinach, or your brother-in-law might feel sick at the sight of tom yam soup. You don’t want to see unhappy family members during a reunion… Call them up and ask if they’re okay with your menu! If not, get suggestions.

If nothing works, PIZZA will! No one will be left behind…

2. Variety

Nobody wants to see fried rice, fried noodles, fried koey-teow, fried chicken and salted egg-fried squid on the dinner table. Try not to be boring with your menu. Add some colour, order that vegies, have some variety,… well, you get the point.

3. RSVP!

We know that reunions mean every family member should be present, but sometimes, unavoidable situations happen. You might have a really important deadline to meet, or an urgent meeting that cannot be postponed. What you can do?

CALL, and inform the host before-hand that you can’t make it so that they can plan how much to cook, or how many pax to order for. Food wastage is a major concern and we should try avoiding that.  Let no food go to waste!

4. Price check

It’s normal to see price tags a little more expensive than usual during festive seasons. However, make it a habit to always do some survey before you decide a place to dine in or order from.

You wouldn’t want to pay for something five times higher than the normal price. That’s a white elephant!

5. Pot-Luck!

Best way to save yourself some trouble. You don’t even have to think of what to order or what to prepare. Just call them, and say the magic-word! Everybody contributes something, you’d have lesser work, the dining table would be full, and everybody gets food and no one complains! It’s a win-win situation!

What are some things you consider while planning the menu for reunion dinners?
