“Abuse” doesn’t always have to be physical. There are ways to know if someone in your life is toxic for you, from the way they treat you.

While we sometimes think it’s okay to throw hurtful words at someone, especially your partner in the midst of arguments, it can turn toxic if it becomes a pattern. So, here are some signs you might be stuck in an abusive relationship without you even knowing, according to FamilyLaw.com.

1. Your Partner Is Always Putting Your Down

If you feel your self-esteem is going lower and lower every time you’re with your partner, chances are that they’re always comparing you to someone better. They may not realise they’re doing so because you’ve never talked to them about it, but it can be a very bad habit in the long run.

Examples of this may be comments like “my mom is a way better cook than you are”, or “don’t make jokes if you can’t” etc.

2. Gaslighting

Your feelings are valid if even people think they’re not. Yes, sometimes you may be overthinking but if it’s used against you every time you get emotional or upset, that is considered an abuse.

If you always find your partner disregarding your thoughts or emotions by saying “stop being so emotional”, “you’re overthinking this” etc, it’s time you confront them.

3. Their Opinions Above Yours, ALWAYS

No one is ALWAYS right and if your partner thinks he / she is, they might be an abusive partner. Disagreements happen in relationships and that’s fine. What’s not fine is when you’re always in the wrong.

4. You Feel Anxious

You should be comfortable around your partner. If you get anxious every time you wear something or say something, if you’re constantly thinking of whether he / she would agree with something you’d want to do, it sounds like you’re in an abusive relationship.

You shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells. You should be a team!

5. Extreme Jealousy

A little bit of jealousy is fine but if your partner or spouse is extremely suspicious of your every move and decision, it is not okay.

Look out for the early signs and try to confront them about it so that you can build a healthier relationship with each other. However, if things are not changing, it’s best for you to know when to leave. You deserve better.
