Chinese New Year used to be different when we were kids compared to recent years. These days, everything is digital, professionally made, and looks spanking brand new.

However, back then, our parents would put up homemade decorations, everything was practically red, and though things may not seem expensive, the home was filled with love.

Of course, we’re not saying things aren’t great now, but…

Don’t you just miss these childhood memories?

#1 Buying mini mandarin orange trees

Those trees used to only be available around CNY times back then and they were pricey. It was a sign that your family is doing well financially!

H#2 Tying little red ribbons around all the plants

Another cheap and easy trick to make the home feel more festive was to buy a roll of red ribbons, cut them into short pieces and tie little bows around all the plants, including the mandarin orange trees.

#3 Making DIY red packet decorations

Fans, fishes, and mini ‘tanglungs’ were some of the most common decorations. At least one month earlier, your mum would make you sit down and prepare those with her. Then, once you got it right, she would make you do it all on your own.

#4 Putting up the red cloth and large ‘tanglungs’

When you were younger, you probably held onto the ladder as your dad or older siblings climbed up high to put the deep red cloth above the main entrance and ‘tanglungs’ under the porch.

#5 Changing all the curtains, bedsheets and sofa covers to red ones

When the spring-cleaning starts, everything automatically changes to red such as the curtains, bedsheets, and even sofa covers… back when sofa covers could be changed.

#6 Taking out all the traditional bowls and cups

You know these traditional bowls and cups were only used for the reunion dinner and Chinese New Year because, after the 15th day, they will not be seen anymore for the rest of the year.

#7 Sticking the ‘fu’ on your main door

Sticking the Chinese word for ‘blessing’ or ‘good fortune’ on your main door is to welcome all the good luck into the home. Some might argue that it should be put upright while others prefer it upside down.

But whatever your family prefers, seeing your elders write it on a red paper and then sticking it on your door feels like putting the cherry on top when decorating the house for CNY!
