This article in seven words: Cats are not for the faint-hearted.

Dear cat people, what you’re about to read might come off as some sort of a personal attack, but it really isn’t. Have an open mind and please take note on the below. Your cat’s saliva can harm you.

Infectious diseases experts say that there’s at least one person a week on average who comes to get treatment for the bacteria contracted from their cats’ saliva.

Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD), is said to be a result of a potentially deadly bacteria found in the mouths of cats.

While not all cats might carry these bacteria called ‘bartonella henselae’, 40 per cent of cats do carry it at some stage in their lives and it’s better for you to be safe around your pets.

The bacteria can cause damage to the brain, eyes, heart, or other internal organs in children or adults with weakened immune systems… although complications are rare.

Such was the experience for this family who lost their 80-year-old grandmother, after their pet cat scratched and then licked a wound she had.

The grandma contracted bacterial meningitis and spent nine days in a coma before she took her last breath and was taken off life support.

The family from Melbourne is devastated by the news but believes that Minty, their cat, must have licked her through the night as she sleeps with the grandma.

Share this with a friend who loves cats… just because you love them.
