Be Careful Drinking From Glass Mugs!

Here’s why glass mugs shatter for no reason.

If you didn’t already know this, glass is a poor heat conductor. So when you pour hot water on it, it can break!

But glass mugs are designed in such a way that they can withstand heat. Still, a woman got the shock of her life when her glass mug shattered into pieces at a food court just before she could take a sip of her tea.

The glass shards flew everywhere including her mouth and the tea spilt all over her laptop she was working on, leaving a blank screen (and a major repair, obviously).

The woman said that she brushed the glass off her arm and realised she was scratched. She spat out the glass in her mouth and we’re glad she’s not badly injured, although she is badly traumatised.

After cleaning up the mess, the food court supervisor apologised for the incident and assured that they’d give their feedback to the supplier.

The mugs are new, apparently… only a month old. However, they’d shown signs of cracking when hot water is poured. The food court has since asked for ceramic mugs instead. The supervisor also invited the customer to come and have a free meal, as a sincere apology from their end.

Here’s what you can do to avoid your glass mug from shattering, or rather reduce the risk of them shattering.

  1. Pour hot water very slowly into the glass.

  2. Put a metal spoon in the glass before pouring hot water so that it can at least conduct some of the heat away.

  3. Warm up the glass gradually by filling in a little bit of room temperature water before pouring boiling hot water.

Or just use ceramic mugs!
