So Taiwan was COVID free for a brief moment until one locally-transmitted case was reported on December 22, 2020.

The said case was a close contact of a New Zealander pilot, who had tested positive on December 20 upon returning from the U.S on December 16.

However, the pilot did not come clean with his travel history and close contact. Hence, he was fined S$ 14,177 (over RM40,000) by Taiwan’s Health Minister for being dishonest. He has also been fired from the airlines he works for.

When asked by the authorities, the man said he couldn’t remember the details as he didn’t have the habit of recording where he had gone.

His irresponsibility increases the risk of infection to other residents in Taiwan and this is why we’re reminded time and again on the importance of contact tracing. It’s not only about you, it’s about everyone around as well.

So, please be responsible and consult health officers right away if you have any symptoms or if you know you’ve been in close contacts with someone who has the symptoms.

Stay safe, everyone!
