You must be thinking why we’re talking about cycling while living in the city with heavy traffic and unpredictable weather.

Cycling isn’t the easiest sport to pick up when you’re living in the Klang Valley – the heavy traffic, bad road conditions and lack of suitable cycling lanes can often discourage and even intimidate anyone from taking it up more seriously. To deal with that, we’ve compiled a list of routes that are safe, scenic and offer a new way to explore the Valley.

We compile a list of scenic cycling routes around KL and Selangor to help city folks escape the usual hustle and bustle.

Like most smaller lakes in the Klang Valley, Titiwangsa Lake Garden or Taman Tasik Titiwangsa originated from tin mining activities back in the day. It sits in the heart of the city surrounded by coconut trees and banyans, with fountains to keep the water clean and clear.

There are flat and wide pavements with no cars around, so you can take advantage of the cycling paths around the lake and admire the green oasis overlooking the city skyline. It’s also a great spot to get famous KL landmarks in the background, like the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower.

#2 Bukit Tunku

This posh neighbourhood, also known as KL’s very own Beverly Hills, makes a great route for urban cyclists because of the sprawling estate and greenery in the backyard. It’s always nice to spot lush green pockets like this in the middle of the concrete jungle!

You can begin your journey from Jalan Duta Kiara and ride all the way to Bukit Nanas and back, or you could also start at Taman Tugu for a grand view of city skyline! This path is best for intermediate and advanced cyclists.

#3 Bukit Kiara

A slightly challenging route but a thrilling one nonetheless, the Bukit Kiara cycling route offers a mix of steep trails ascending and descending across calming trees and streams.

But if you’re not much of a mountain biker, you can head down to the Bukit Kiara Park for wider and well-paved paths. Just watch out for the extra-friendly monkeys as you cycle along!

#4 The Central Park, Desa ParkCity

Popularly known as the go-to park for dog owners in the Klang Valley, you can bring your pets along while you cycle along the tree-lined path next to the scenic lake. It’s a lot more breezy than you imagine!

After a good biking session, head to one of the restaurants at The Waterfront to grab a quick meal or a cup of coffee with furry friends sitting around!

#5 Putrajaya Botanical Garden

This peaceful garden nestled away from the city centre has numerous paths that are great for cycling. Each route will take you along lush greens and riverside landscapes with state-of-the-art architecture within a stone’s throw.

It’s a well-maintained park with a bunch of activities for the whole family because there’s a bike rental service here as well. The route is relatively flat and easy to cycle, but you can also ride up to the top of the hill towards the Sun Garden if you’re feeling adventurous.

#6 River of Life

The River of Life started as an initiative to transform the Klang River into a vibrant waterfront landscape with the community in mind. Through this project, this space has turned into another cycling route that consists of two loops.

Both routes begin at Dataran Merdeka and branches out into the northern trail and southern trail. The northern trail leads to Chow Kit or the Tiong Nam locality, while the southern one heads towards Brickfields. The river view looks majestic especially at night, remember to stop for a quick photo!

#7 National Botanical Park, Shah Alam

The National Botanical Park or Taman Botani Negara is Malaysia’s first ever agriculture park that was built in 1986. Spanning an area of 1,295ha, it’s also one of Malaysia’s largest botanical parks, so you’re in for a long ride through the gardens and hills!

But get ready to pedal hard because the off-road terrain here can really work up a sweat as it covers the Malaysia Agriculture Park and Shah Alam Community Forest. There are also bicycles and mountain bikes for rent here, so don’t worry if you don’t own one yourself.

#8 Forest Research Institute Of Malaysia (FRIM)

You probably didn’t expect FRIM to be another recommended cycling spot because all you would think about here is hiking and camping. But it has a number of mountain bike trails that are approved with different levels of difficulties and terrain!

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner in cycling or a pro mountain biker, there’s a trail for everyone here, including kid-friendly paths! You can stop by one of the waterfalls for a refreshing dip after a ride.

Often called the Lake Garden, Taman Tasik Perdana is a park that’s unlike any other in the city, with tree-lined trails, landscaped gardens, a lake, and fountains for a peaceful ride around. There’s even a planetarium here!

Located not too far from KL Sentral, you can ride here and continue your journey to the nearby Islamic Arts Museum and National Mosque of Malaysia to complete your route. You could also begin from the National Museum and head for the park’s entrance.

This park circles around Taman Tasik Metropolitan Kepong in a 3.4km route surrounded by lakeside greenery that’s not as busy as its next door neighbour, Desa ParkCity. Besides being famous for kite-flying, casual cyclists also love coming here for its flat and easy pathway.

And if you stay till the evening, you might be able to catch the most picturesque sunset by the lake for your Instagram feed!

If you’re dying for more of the great outdoors, go on a day-long joyride all the way from Kuala Selangor to Sekinchan! Despite the distance, you’ll be surprised how flat and easy this cycling path is as you ride along and explore the scenic route famous paddy fields.

You can start early in the morning at the coastal town of Kuala Selangor and head towards Sekinchan. The entire trip to and fro is about 78km, so don’t forget your sunscreen, water bottle, and long-distance biking essentials!

#12 Genting Sempah

Don’t panic just yet! We’re not telling you to cycle all the way from KL to Genting Highlands. But the journey at the foot of the mountain is a famous route among cycling junkies because it’s the ultimate training path before attempting other more challenging routes in the city!

This path stretches about 17km long starting from Hospital Orang Asli Gombak, Jalan Gombak until you reach the Genting Sempah R&R, where you’ll be caught in between the border of Selangor and Pahang. It’s also shaded all the way so you won’t feel the heat as much as open roads.

You must be wondering what’s the best way to get to these scenic cycling trails around the city by now because you can’t exactly be cycling there before you even start the actual route.
