The pandemic has made us all more hygienic, aware of our surroundings and also… more paranoid. While it’s human to feel the latter given the present time we’re in, we must also respond to our emotions sensibly.

A 75 year-old Singaporean man was attacked by a food stall owner for allegedly sneezing without his mask on.

The incident, which occured on Feb 4 2021 left the elderly man with some bruises and torn clothes. He said in an interview that he only took off his mask to wipe his nose.

The man claimed that one of the stallholder’s assistants “clawed” at him, tearing his shirt and leaving scratches on him, before throwing a bucketful of water.

Not only that, he was reportedly hit by the handle of a dustpan, which has left his left arm swollen.

The senior citizen added that the assistants were unhappy that he had stopped working for the stall and that he would regularly be warned or scolded for not wearing a mask whenever he took it off to eat or wash his mouth.

However, like how there’s always two sides to a story, the employee claimed that the man had sneezed in his direction, which triggered his anger and emphasized that he had done it several times in the past. His sister in-law, who’s one of the assistants said that she splashed the water to stop them both from escalating the already tense situation.

To add to this, she denied clawing at him but admitted that she held on to the dustpan handle in self-defense.

A police report has been lodged and the case is under investigation. The elderly man’s daughter is very upset about what had happened.

We hope they resolve the issue soon. People are already going through tough times, let’s learn to be forgiving, especially with senior citizens who are vulnerable. Remember, the fight is against the virus, not against each other. Camaraderie is important in times like this. #StaySafe
