It’s been a challenging year for the film industry, to say the least. But it didn’t stop filmmakers from giving movie buffs one highly-anticipated blockbuster after another. So we’re in for a treat for the rest of the year!

Speaking of major blockbusters, two of the biggest movies a lot of fans were most looking forward recently were Godzilla vs Kong and Mortal Kombat.

Despite having very different plot points, you may be surprised to know that are quite a number of similarities between the two movies. Here are some interesting facts:

They’re both part of a franchise

Godzilla vs Kong is a monster film that’s part of the Godzilla franchise, which many fans of the original Japanese version, as well as the modern American version have grown to love since the latter was introduced in the MonsterVerse in 2014.

In a similar manner, Mortal Kombat is based on the video game franchise of the same name. It also serves as a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film series nearly 20 years after the first film, which wasn’t so lucky in terms of reception in 1997.

They’re both super action-packed

Both movies scream action from the start to finish. Godzilla vs Kong is pure monster fight all the way, which will keep your adrenaline pumping (and all the fanboys and fangirls cheering) throughout the movie.

Mortal Kombat has a lot of elements of martial arts weaved into it, watching it makes you feel almost as if you’re immersed in the video game as one of the champions.

They’re both about battling for power

Before watching Godzilla vs Kong, you’ll want to decide whether to be on Team Godzilla or Team Kong because the name of the movie pretty much sums up what it’s all about as both monsters fight to see who’s king.

On the other hand, Mortal Kombat is a tournament in the fantasy world, where the realm of the Outworld and Earthrealm have to beat each other, emerge as champions, and well, conquer the world.

They both feature up-and-coming cast

Although Godzilla vs Kong is a monster movie, there are human characters, of course, and Millie Bobby Brown is one of the cast, who is no stranger to the fans. She plays Madison Russell, the daughter of scientists from Monarch.

Mortal Kombat features a fresh yet familiar face—Lewis Tan is Cole Young, a former professional MMA fighter who joins the Earthrealm champions to defeat their nemesis. His character also holds a powerful and important secret.

They both contain Japanese elements

While both films are made for Hollywood, you can spot some Japanese elements in each story. For starters, Godzilla a.k.a. Gojira is a kaiju (a Japanese genre of films and TV shows featuring giant monsters) that originates from Japan. Come on… which Japanese pop culture fan doesn’t know Godzilla?

Mortal Kombat doesn’t have the same origin but this instalment in particular starts off with a scene set in 17th-century Japan where a ninja clan led by Hanzo Hasashi is attacked by assassins. The rest of the plot also largely surrounds the search for Hanzo’s bloodline, who is said to unite the new generation of Earthrealm champions.
