As a country that brings together many different cultures, Malaysian food is as equally unique, with the combination of sweet, sour, and spicy mixed together in a way unlike any other countries’ cuisine!
Malaysia has a reputation of being a food paradise as it offers a mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine. Even famous celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay and the late Anthony Bourdain had travelled all over Malaysia and sampled our food.

Recently, British chef, Jamie Oliver shared on his Instagram of him cooking a Malaysian-style fish dish on his cooking show, Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, which airs on Britain’s Channel 4.
In the video, Oliver is seen making the “lovely baked sea bass” dish, and among the ingredients he uses for the paste are lemongrass, red chillies, shallot, ginger, kaffir lime leaves, and salt which he crushes using the pestle and mortar or also known as the lesung batu by Malaysians.
He also added some fish oil, tomato puree, and lime juice into the mix, then he slathered the paste onto the fish, before wrapping it in banana leaf.
...and as we all know, cooking your food in banana leaf is a game changer! Just look at our nasi lemak lah!
After baking the fish in the oven for a period of time, the video then ended with Jamie enjoying the fish dish with some jasmine rice using his hand, like a true Malaysian!
“Normally, I would use a knife and fork for this, but today I am going to use my very clean hands,” he said.
Many in the comments section agreed that eating with your hands is the true Malaysian way, and that is the ONLY way to eat a Malaysian dish which we totally agree!
The video has since garnered over 956,953 views and 56,071 likes.
