It’s true that there’s a lot of risk involved with the advancement of technology because people can do ANYTHING online and it may not always turn out in our favour.

A man from Kalimantan, Indonesia was duped by a buyer who paid fake money drawn on multipurpose paper with red marker, in return for a used phone he sold.

The story started to spread on news portals last week, and the seller has since filed a report against the buyer. He explained how he’d planned to sell his used phone to an anonymous buyer he met online. They scheduled to meet up to exchange the items face-to-face.

The biggest mistake he made was failing to check the amount before the buyer left. When he realised, it was already too late.

The buyer already looked a little suspicious, by wanting to meet up at night and by leaving his motorcycle engine on during the hurried transaction. So it was not so surprising for the victim to see a bunch of “hand-drawn” money worth IDR100,000.

And of course, the buyer’s phone was unreachable right after the exchange and his whereabouts are completely unknown.

This story is another reminder for all of us to be more careful when making similar exchanges online. Beware of scams and happy shopping!
