People From The Slums In India Are Developing Antibodies After Long-Term Exposure To COVID-19

Would India be the one of the first countries to beat the virus?

India is one of the worst affected countries after the U.S. In fact it’s so bad, COVID-19 cases in the country remains a cause for alarm although it has seen a huge drop from its highest number back in September 2020 (which went up to over 90,000 cases).

Interestingly, past warnings by health authorities that urban slums and the ones in the countryside would be the worst hit, are being proven wrong. In fact. residents appear to be developing COVID-19 antibodies and are fighting the virus better than the ones living in cities and such.

New Delhi’s Health Minister Satyender Jain said that this could be due to long-term exposure to the virus and that antibodies have been detected in 56.13 percent of the population.

These results came after the largest survey done in the national capital of Delhi from Jan 15 to Jan 23, 2021. The sample size was about 28,000.

The state is now striving towards herd immunity after one in every two people was exposed to the deadly virus and developed antibodies to fight it.

The possible theory behind this could be the fact that the poor living in the slums have been already exposed to many bacteria and viruses since young, so their bodies could handle it better.

As much as the country faced its worst, it’s now showing good improvement as the number of cases are dropping and 3.9 million people have already been vaccinated, with over 300 million more in line.

Having shared India’s story it’s important to remember that every country has its own measure of fighting the pandemic. As a responsible Malaysian, we ask not to let your guard down or risk exposure to COVID-19. Have your masks on and let’s fight against this together.
