Are you one of those people who say they need to sleep early tonight but then just decide to scroll on social media for a bit, only to realise it’s 3 hours have already passed?
As it turns out there’s an actual new term for it — ‘revenge bedtime procrastination’.
According to Dr. Rajkumar Dasgupta, assistant professor of clinical medicine in Los Angeles, revenge sleep procrastination is common among overworked individuals as they want to ‘steal’ some of their bedtime to reclaim something for themselves.
It’s okay for us to have some time to ourselves, but if it’s going to be consistent and if it’s causing you lack of sleep, that might be an issue.

Who is more prone to having this habit?
How do we stop it?
1. Try to stop binge-watching
Try limiting your binge-watching to daytimes or the weekends. Planning to start a new series at 11pm on a workday is NOT a good idea.
But if you must do so, then make sure you don’t spend hours on screen. Have a time limit and follow it.
2. Don’t bring work home
If you’re working from home, at least leave work in another room or have an office space at home so you know you’re no more working when you settle in bed.
You need some me-time (before midnight) and overworking is not going to give you that.
3. NO touring on social media
Discipline yourself. Try not to go on your social media when it’s bedtime because once you open it, we know it’s pretty hard to leave.
4. Try to calm yourself to sleep
Try doing some light exercise like yoga, or relax your mind with some self-care. That way your mind will be calm enough to fall asleep without much trouble.
Well, habits die hard but this is important for you to know because it can be detrimental to your health in the long-term.
Say NO to revenge sleep procrastination!
