The government is considering reinstating the travel ban imposed on PTPTN borrowers and many are unhappy.

This comes after the abolishment of last year’s travel ban, in May, as a part of Pakatan Harapan’s 100 day manifesto which makes an allowance for borrowers with an income below RM 4,000 to defer payments as a means to ease their financial burdens.

As reported by a local online news channel, PTPTN Vice CEO Mastura Mohd Khalid has confirmed that the committee of the education fund is mulling over the return of the ban following the backlash that came from members of the public who have paid off their debts or are diligently showing effort to do so.

These borrowers feel it is unfair for the government to abolish the travel ban as they did not receive any incentives for being responsible while those who postpone or ignore they payment notices have been granted leeway.

In an effort to silence this ‘fight between brothers’, PTPTN has promised that major action will be taken against those who further postpone or make no effort to follow through on their payments.

“To those who do not care to pay their debts, especially when they can afford to, certain measures will be taken in order to ensure they abide to their payment schedule in an effort to safeguard the availability of the funds for future borrowers.”

Not to fret, the authorities are currently still in discussions in regards to the measures they seek to take. It has been said the view of the public will be taken into consideration and upheld at a ministerial level before decisions are set in stone.

Among the measures proposed include preventing defaulters from renewing passports, driving licenses, road taxes and even business license. So to avoid all the impending trouble, we at MIX would like to urge you to settle your debts as soon as you can. It is not only the adult thing to do, it is also definitely the decent thing to do so that this amenity can be enjoyed by all deserving Malaysians.

As for those who are making a paycheck of ‘just enough’, is bringing back the travel ban going to solve this issue? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned with us at MIX for more exciting updates!
