When Urban Transformation Centres (UTC) were first introduced, Malaysians were honestly impressed. We were finally able to renew our license, passport and IC in one place! This saved us both time and money! What was more impressive was the operating hours. Didn’t manage to get leave that day? No worries, you can pop by after work because it’s open until 10pm.

Sadly, soon you’ll have to get that leave day or go during the weekend because UTCs nationwide will have new operating hours come 2019, according to an announcement from the Secretary General of Treasury.

Starting next year, UTCs new operating hours are from 8am to 7pm daily. On Fridays, UTCs in the peninsular will break for Friday prayers from 12.15 to 2.45pm, while those in Sabah and Labuan will break from 11.30am to 2pm on Fridays. As for Sarawak, Friday prayer break will be from 11.45pm to 2pm.

The announcement also mentioned that UTCs will be operating daily, which we understand to include weekends. They will be open throughout the day and will only have break time on Fridays. So, you can still head there during your lunch break on Mondays through Thursdays. They will also be closed on public holidays.

After the announcement of the change in operating hours was made, former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak criticised the move via a post on his Facebook.

UTCs were an initiative by the previous government who decided to put all the different government departments and agencies under one roof to enable the public to settle their affairs in one place.

Sure, it’s not gonna be as easy for us to run our errands anymore. But we figure that maybe government servants want to be able to go home and have dinner with their families too?…Tell us what you think!
