How do you know you’re really passionate about something? It’s when you know you won’t get paid for doing it but you’d still want to do it- just like this young man.

Meet Kaantha Rooban a/l Subramaniam, who has a deep burning passion for volunteerism.

this bachelor is so passionate about saving lives that he doesn’t mind losing sleep!

The 26 year-old juggles both his passion and profession, as a videographer-cum-editor at a popular Tamil radio station by day, and a first responder of medical assistance by night!

His journey volunteering started when he joined the Red Crescent Society back in school, through the help of one of his dedicated teachers, Mr Murugan, who taught him more about volunteerism.

Rooban sometimes gets just a few hours of sleep every day, as he balances his busy moments at work, while at the same time still staying on call as a first responder.

Despite his hectic schedule, he still wanted to expand his knowledge on the medical line so he attended life support courses!

He was further inspired by one of his ‘brothers’ in voluntary service, Syarul Nizam bin Raziff, an experienced paramedic to work with an ambulance. Rooban now knows how to drive an ambulance (thanks to Syarul) and he continues to learn new things every passing day.

Receiving calls, picking up patients, performing basic treatments are just a few of the many things Rooban does during his volunteer service.

To date, he has not only helped victims of disasters in Malaysia, but he has also helped the victims of the tragic Nepal earthquake in 2017.

“The satisfaction you get when you help someone is indescribable. People should learn how to expect less and accept more. That way, we would have more volunteers and the world would indeed be a better place,” he adds.

When asked about some of his sleepless nights, he just laughed it off, saying that if it means he saved lives by losing sleep, he wouldn’t think twice to do it anytime at all.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear uniforms and still slay all the same!

Way to go Kaantha Rooban!
