Tom & Jerry Director, Gene Deitch Passed Away At 95

We’re sure that every 90s kid will vouch for the joy cartoons brought to their life, but as much as we loved what we saw, we never realized how much idea and time were put into producing one cartoon!  

One of the many faces behind amazing cartoons like Tom & Jerry and Popeye the Sailor, Gene Deitch took his last breath yesterday. The American Oscar winning illustrator, animator, film director and producer died unexpectedly during the night in his apartment.

Here’s a list of his achievements during his lifetime:

1. His movie, Munro won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film back in 1960.
2. In 1964, two other short films were added to the list, Here’s Nudnik and How To Avoid Friendship.
3. He directed 13 episodes of Tom And Jerry as well as some episodes of Popeye The Sailor.
4. He also captured life in communist Czechslovakia, where he lived with his wife and later in the Czech Republic after the 1989 anti-communist Velvet Revolution in his memoirs, For The Love Of Prague.
5. He received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation in 2004.

Gene leaves behind his wife and three sons, all of whom are cartoonists and illustrators. We hope his legacy continues forever.
