After the smoking ban in Parliament and at all eateries that took effect since 15th October 2018 and 1st January 2019 respectively, the Health Ministry is now planning on making universities smoke-free zones, possibly within the year.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced this upon attending the launch of Pharmaceutical Association of Malaysia (PhAMA) Industry Fact Book: 2018 Edition. He also added that all universities, regardless of public or private would be included in this plan as a measure taken to focus on a healthy environment for the non-smokers.

“Smokers can continue but they have to respect the rights of non-smokers”, Dr Noor Hisham told reporters during the conference.
Regarding the ongoing ban at eateries, ministry enforcement personnel will only issue warning letters during the first six months of this year. However, if anybody is found guilty of breaching the ban after the six month period is over, they can be fined up to RM 10, 000 or jailed for up to two years.
So far from 1st January to 8th January 2019, 3,470 premises have already been inspected for compliance.
To date, over 2000 warning letters have been issued in Butterworth and Johor Bahru alone.
