At the initial stages of the spread of the novel coronavirus, it was said that animals could not contract the COVID-19 virus.

However, four lions at Barcelona Zoo in Spain have just been confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Upon confirmation by veterinary officials, investigations are now underway to establish how the animals became infected.

Three females, Zala, Nima and Run Run as well as one male, Kiumbe were tested after showing mild symptoms. They’re believed to have been in contact with two staff members who were also infected.

A standard PCR swab test was performed on the lions as they’re close with the staff.

According to a statement from the zoo, the animals have been showing upper respiratory symptoms, however they only have minor coughing and sneezing right now. They’re being monitored closely and also being given anti-inflammatory drugs.

Sources say that this is the second known case in which large felines have contracted the virus. The first case was reported back in April at the Bronx Zoo in the US, where four tigers and three lions tested positive, and all of them recovered fully after.

We hope Zala, Nima, Run Run and Kiumbe will recover soon as well!

P.S: If you have recently gone to the zoo or if you’re planning to go to the zoo soon, please don’t feel overwhelmed. You’re never too close to the animals anyway.
