Woman Teaches Sons That Bleed-Throughs Happen, Normalising Periods

Thanks Tara for bringing such a positive change in society!

Menstruation is a normal and regular event in every healthy adolescent girl’s life.

Sadly, menstruation is overwhelmingly considered a women’s secret business, and young girls are taught from a young age that they have to be discreet about it.

Silence around periods has had a negative impact on girls and their health.

One woman, however, feels that it is important for her sons to be informed about something that is so normal, smashing the menstrual stigma and even encouraged them to carry tampons and sanitary pads in their bag just in case a female friend needs one.

According to Times Now News, female Blogger, Tara Ahrens wants to break the stigma around menstruation by making it normal for her sons to carry period supplies.

She wrote in her blog, “Most women and girls will tell you that merely talking about having your period in public is still pretty taboo. But as the mom of a 10 and a half-year-old daughter and two teen sons, I am hoping to change that.”

She explained to her boys, Micah and Elijah that “bleed-throughs happen and they are mortifying and can be traumatizing, so kindness and understanding from ANY friend goes a long way. So, be that friend.”

Her sons were initially reluctant but after an incident happened where one of Elijah’s friends had bled-through, after that, the boys always kept pads in their backpacks.

Micah even let all his close female friends know that he always keeps a sweatshirt in his locker and a tampon as well. He explained that: “In case you have an emergency, my mom wants you to be covered.”

Tara further said: “As you normalise these things in your own family by regularly discussing them, they became normal to your kids, too. It’s my hope that these kids know that my boys are a safe place to get period supplies, should they ever need them.”

She hopes that her small actions can help change the way kids in school handle and view the whole subject

Well, kudos to her for bringing such an important subject to light!
