An American travel blogger has taken social media by storm with glowing praise for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city. Highlighting its unexpected modernity, he compared its infrastructure—particularly the transit system—favorably to that of New York City.
The blogger, known as “that Evan guy,” shared his awe in a recent YouTube video, confessing that his visit to Kuala Lumpur shattered his preconceived notions about Southeast Asia.

“Kuala Lumpur is incredibly modern, far from what I expected,” he said. “Skyscrapers are everywhere—it feels like an international metropolis.”
Evan documented his ride on Malaysia’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, where he was impressed by the cleanliness and state-of-the-art facilities.
“The subway stations here are stunning and so clean! They’re way better than those in New York—by a long shot,” he exclaimed.
The blogger drew sharp comparisons between Kuala Lumpur’s transit system and New York City’s subways, describing the latter as plagued by hygiene issues.
“Subway stations in New York often have litter, vomit, and even rats. The smell can be unbearable,” he shared.

In contrast, Evan praised Kuala Lumpur’s spotless LRT carriages and the orderly, polite behavior of its passengers.
“This trip to Malaysia has been a real eye-opener,” he said. “I never imagined Kuala Lumpur’s subway system could be this clean and modern. It’s truly unbelievable for someone coming from the U.S.”
The video quickly went viral, sparking pride among Malaysians who celebrated the country’s world-class infrastructure. Many netizens expressed their delight, with one commenting, “It’s great to see our country being recognized for its progress and modernity!”
Evan’s experience highlights Malaysia’s growing appeal as a global destination and a city that continues to surprise and impress visitors from around the world.
