Anthony Mackie may be stepping into the role of Captain America in Brave New World, but his most important job is being a father. During a recent appearance on The Pivot podcast, Mackie discussed how he’s raising his four sons with discipline and strong values. “I keep my boys humble. They’ve never had a pair of Jordans. They don’t do all that internet fly stuff,” he said. “I could be the biggest star in the world, but that doesn’t mean I’ll let them be stupid.”

His 15-year-old son, the eldest, plays a key role in setting an example for his younger brothers. “Once you get one that’s right, he’s going to straighten the other ones out,” Mackie explained.

Mackie, who shares his four sons with ex-wife Sheletta Chapital, believes in instilling discipline and responsibility early on. He also spoke about shifts in traditional masculinity. “Over the past 20 years, we’ve been living through the death of the American male,” he said. “Masculinity is disappearing from our homes and communities. But I raise my boys to be young men.”

The Avengers star has reinforced these values since his children were toddlers. “Since they were two years old, I’ve told them: Always say thank you. Open doors for women. Take care of your mom,” he shared.

Whenever Mackie leaves for work, he gives his eldest son an important responsibility. “I tell my 15-year-old, ‘You’re the man of the house. Lock the doors. Set the alarm. Call or text me before bed and when you wake up.’”

Despite his Hollywood success, Mackie insists that fame and fortune don’t compare to being present for his children. “All the money and celebrity in the world mean nothing if I’m not there to protect my family,” he said.

Mackie first gained recognition in 8 Mile (2002) and has since built an impressive career, most notably as Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, as he takes on the mantle of Captain America, his greatest mission remains guiding his sons to become strong, responsible young men.
