After months of speculations and rumors, it is official! Courteney Cox is officially returning to the Scream franchise, reprising her iconic role as investigative journalist-turned-true crime author Gale Weathers in the upcoming Scream 7.
The news was confirmed by the official Scream franchise Instagram account, which shared a report from Variety. Cox's return follows her appearance in Scream VI, the first film in the series without Neve Campbell, who opted not to return due to contract issues. With Campbell’s departure, Cox is now the only actor to appear in all seven Scream films.
The franchise has seen a number of changes since Scream VI, including the firing of Melissa Barrera after she voiced support for Palestine, which led to Jenna Ortega, Barrera's co-star, quitting the franchise. Additionally, Scream VII has experienced a directorial shakeup, with Christopher Landon stepping down. Despite these disruptions, the tide began to turn in March when Neve Campbell announced she would return, alongside the original scriptwriter Kevin Williamson, who is making his directorial debut in the franchise.
Though plot details for Scream 7 are still under wraps, Cox has expressed her desire for David Arquette to reprise his role as Dewey Riley, a character who was tragically killed in the fifth film. Cox reflected on the loss, calling Dewey a beloved and comedic character who added a unique charm to the series. Scream 7 is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026, and promises to bring even more twists and turns to the iconic slasher franchise.
