The Scream universe just got even more haunting. Following the shocking announcements that Matthew Lillard (Scream) and Scott Foley (Scream 3) are reprising their roles despite their characters’ on-screen deaths, Scream 7 is adding another familiar face from beyond the grave—David Arquette.

A report by Entertainment Weekly stated that Arquette, best known for playing the beloved Dewey Riley, is officially returning for the next chapter of the iconic slasher series.

Arquette first appeared as Deputy Dewey in Wes Craven’s original 1996 Scream, sharing the screen with franchise staples Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) and Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers). Over the years, he became a fan favorite, surviving multiple encounters with Ghostface before meeting his tragic demise in 2022’s Scream at the hands of Mikey Madison’s killer character.

At the time, director Tyler Gillett called Dewey’s death “gut-wrenching” but necessary to keep the franchise’s signature edge. “We loved it, we hated it, and it was brutal,” he told Entertainment Weekly. Meanwhile, co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin admitted there were doubts about the decision, revealing that even Arquette encouraged them to reconsider. “In our first conversation with David, he said, ‘Think about it, think about it.’”

And now, it seems the franchise has thought about it—bringing Dewey back in some form for Scream 7.

Details on how Dewey (and the other resurrected characters) will be woven into the story remain a mystery. The Scream series has played with hallucinations before, most notably in 2022’s installment when Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) appeared as a ghostly vision to his daughter, Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera). Could Scream 7 be taking the supernatural approach again? Or is there another shocking twist in store?

With franchise creator Kevin Williamson returning to direct, fans are eagerly speculating about what this means for Sidney, Gale, and the legacy of Ghostface.

In addition to Arquette, Scream 7 boasts an impressive cast, including Isabel May as Sidney’s daughter, Joel McHale as her husband, and returning favorites Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin. Courteney Cox is also set to reprise her role as Gale Weathers.

Newcomers Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, and Mark Consuelos round out the ensemble.

Currently in production, Scream 7 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 27, 2026—and with so many franchise veterans returning, it’s shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable entries yet.
