Drew Barrymore is opening up about her unconventional childhood and longing for a more traditional family life.

On The Drew Barrymore Show, she told guest Moon Zappa that she envied classmates who could call their parents when sick. “I could never get a hold of anybody,” she said.
Barrymore, who was emancipated at 14, has spoken about her father’s absence and her mother’s lack of boundaries. Despite her gratitude for the freedom she had, she struggled with parenting her own daughters, Frankie and Olive.

Her search for stability even led her to ask E.T. director Steven Spielberg to be her father. Though he declined, he became her godfather instead.
Now, as a mother, Barrymore works to provide the structure she once wished for.
