After years of the Duolingo mascot publicly thirsting over the pop icon on TikTok, the language-learning app dropped a shocking (and completely satirical) announcement on February 11, declaring that their beloved green owl had tragically passed away.

And Dua? She responded with peak internet humor, writing, "Til' death duo part" on X (formerly Twitter).
But the saga didn’t end there. On February 12, Duolingo took things even further, revealing that Duo met his untimely fate after being struck by a Tesla Cybertruck (truly a 2025 way to go). The company even put out a "reward" for anyone who could identify the driver, urging fans to post tips on TikTok.
Their original "death" statement? Absolutely unhinged. "Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know."

Dua wasn't the only celeb mourning Duo's passing—Joe Jonas also chimed in. And while she never actually collaborated with Duolingo, the company has been obsessing over her since 2021, repeatedly calling her Duo’s "unrequited love interest." They even once pulled a full-on Love Actually moment, with someone in an owl suit holding up signs asking Dua to marry him.
Now, with Duo gone (for now), fans are left wondering—what’s next for the unhinged bird that stalked our notifications and our fave pop queen? RIP Duo, we’ll never forget you... unless we forget our lessons again.
