Duolingo has officially announced the passing of its beloved mascot, Duo the Owl. The language-learning app shared the news on Tuesday, stating that the cause of death remains unknown.

"For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to complete their lessons—sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence. But even the most relentless of birds can only take so much," Duolingo said in a statement.
The company jokingly acknowledged Duo's many "enemies," adding, "Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson."

Fans and brands alike flooded social media with reactions, mourning Duo’s loss with humor. Squishmallows asked where to RSVP for the funeral, while Baskin Robbins commented, "Only the good (birds) die young." Even Netflix joined in, sharing a clip of Duo being eliminated in Squid Game.
Born (allegedly) in 1000 BC, but actually introduced in 2011, Duo evolved from a simple 2D logo into the animated green owl known for his relentless reminders and viral antics. Over the years, he became a pop culture icon, collaborating with Netflix, starring in memes, and even professing his love for Dua Lipa.

Duolingo closed its statement with a lighthearted request: "We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa's privacy at this time."
While Duo may be "gone," knowing Duolingo, he’ll probably be back—likely with another push notification reminding you to practice your linguistic lessons.
