Turns out, one of the most quoted moments from the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film has Emma Thompson’s brilliant touch.

Director Joe Wright revealed that the Oscar-winning actress quietly helped write a powerful scene between Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) and Charlotte Lucas (Claudie Blakley), where Charlotte defends her engagement to Mr. Collins. The dialogue—now a viral TikTok meme, especially for those turning 27—includes Charlotte’s heartfelt line: “I’m 27 years old. I have no money and no prospects. I’m already a burden to my parents and I’m frightened.”

Wright said he approached Thompson—who also won an Oscar for writing Sense and Sensibility—for feedback. They took a walk through Hampstead Heath, where she began acting out both characters’ parts. “She instructed me to sit on a bench and get out a notepad,” he recalled. “She improvised that scene as I wrote down what she was saying.”

The line “Don’t judge me. Don’t you dare judge me” moved Wright so much he nearly cried. And now, decades later, that moment continues to resonate with audiences everywhere.

“People still relate to Charlotte trying to make the best choices she can,” Wright said. “That’s why those words still hit home.”
