You’ve probably heard a thousand times before, but even in this modern age of information and technology, education is still the greatest gift that us, as parents, can give to our child. After all, it’s the only thing that our children can take with them into all seasons of their lives.
It’s a good thing then that as Malaysians, we’re fortunate enough to have an abundance of schools staffed by dedicated and caring teachers, and an education syllabus that equips our young ones to compete at an international level.

Yet while all school-goers receive quality education, not everyone receives the same schooling experience. Take Devan in the video below for example; his story is one that echoes the lives of many school-goers his age.
Depicted as a bright and hardworking student with a cheerful and positive attitude, Devan comes from a poor background, raised by an equally hardworking single mother with what seems like an infinite amount of sacrificial love for her son.
Every schooling day, Devan’s mother gets up early to prepare a meal of rice and fish for his son. Nothing sad here, the food looks good. But, you quickly find out that Devan doesn’t finish his food. The reason: He is saving a portion of the fish for dinner, and for his mother. Yup, that really stimulates the tear ducts.
But while Devan’s story is one of hardship, it doesn’t end with him having to give up on his education…
The same is true for up to 2.6 million (as of 2014) primary school kids like him thanks to the many initiatives by the Government.
One such initiative is the Supplemental Food Plan Programme or Program Rancangan Makanan Tambahan (RMT), an additional food aid programme aimed at providing nutritious food with balanced nutrients for poor primary school students.
Some of the food distributed to schools across Malaysia include all-time favourites such as nasi lemak, roti canai, nasi campur, and char kuay teow. These meals are sourced from the school’s canteen to ensure adequate supply.
