Job hunting has become a draining, full-time hustle—and Gen Z is over it. A growing number are saying yes to job offers, then never showing up. No call. No email. Just ghosted.

This trend, dubbed “career catfishing,” shows 34% of workers under 27 have done it, along with 24% of millennials. Why? Endless interviews, lack of feedback, and long waits have burned candidates out. Many simply lose interest—or land a better offer in the meantime.
Experts say it’s more than flakiness. “Gen Z wants work that aligns with their values—flexibility, mental health, fair pay,” says psychologist Dr. George Sik. “When employers don’t meet that, they walk.”

Some view this as unprofessional. But younger workers see it as pushback against outdated hiring practices—especially when companies ghost them first.
For businesses, the cost is real: lost time, wasted onboarding, and damage to recruiter trust. The fix? Faster, more transparent hiring and better communication. And if you’re backing out of a job? At least send a message—your reputation will thank you.
