Hilarie Burton Morgan is eager to bring fans back to Tree Hill and remains optimistic about reviving the beloved teen drama.
In August 2024, the One Tree Hill alum confirmed plans to reboot the series alongside fellow stars Sophia Bush and Danneel Ackles, who played Brooke Davis and Rachel Gatina. Now, Burton has shared an update on the project’s progress.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Burton said when the news first came out, they were in the process of presenting things to Netflix. Netflix will decide whether or not it’s greenlit. But she thinks if more people show interest about the revival, it will be for the better.
Burton expressed her enthusiasm for the series’ showrunner, Becky Hartman Edwards, whose previous work includes Firefly Lane, Virgin River, and My Life with the Walter Boys. “She’s so good at female friendships and multi-generational shows, and that’s why we were so excited to team up with her,” Burton said.
The actress, who shares two children with husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan, revealed that part of her motivation for the reboot is creating family-friendly content she can watch with her 14-year-old. “The best part of One Tree Hill was that parents and kids could watch it together and talk about hard things,” she explained.
Originally set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, One Tree Hill followed the lives of feuding brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), along with best friends Peyton Sawyer (Burton Morgan) and Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush). Ackles joined in season 4 as Rachel, initially a rival to Brooke who later became a friend. The series, known for its wild twists and emotional depth, ran for nine seasons, following its characters from adolescence into adulthood.
The revival will reportedly focus on a female-driven narrative, a prospect Burton is particularly excited about. “Being able to work with a team of women and view these stories through a female lens is so important to me,” she said. “Whether it’s a reboot, a brand-new show, or a different movie, female teamwork is the core of anything I’ve done that’s successful. I’m thrilled to collaborate with people I love and admire.”
As the team awaits Netflix’s decision, Burton remains hopeful. “I feel very confident in what’s being presented,” she said, adding that fan enthusiasm could make all the difference.
One Tree Hill’s revival is still in development, with Burton, Bush, and Ackles confirmed to reprise their roles. Fans can look forward to more updates as the project progresses.
