Remember the iconic flying car scene from the 1989 sci-fi hit Back to the Future 2?

Well, as much as we want to see that become a reality, there are no signs of flying cars taking off anytime soon.

However, we can at least all agree that modern technology has enabled the automotive industry to develop sophisticated vehicles such as hybrid vehicles and self-driving cars, among others.

What are hybrid cars and how do they work?

Simply put, a hybrid car uses more than one means of energy: a petrol or diesel engine, and an electric motor. They are gaining popularity due to their advanced features, fuel efficiency and improved performance, which provide users with a better experience.

There are two types of hybrids: plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The former requires you to plug in the car to recharge its battery while the latter doesn’t.

Let’s take a closer look at the HEV

HEV combines a petrol-powered motor with an electric hybrid battery. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine.

This means it saves you from the trouble of looking for charging ports and pausing your day because it automatically charges itself while you’re driving!

The newly-launched Honda Civic e:HEV RS is the latest example of an HEV. It’s powered by a new 2.0L e:HEV powertrain—a first for Civic and Honda Malaysia. Unlike traditional hybrids where the electric motor assists the engine, the e:HEV’s engine produces electricity that assists the motor.

This results in an efficient and crisp acceleration while maintaining comfort and smoothness of the journey, thanks to Honda’s unique control technology. The new model is also Honda’s initiative to minimise energy consumption.

Are HEV cars more fuel efficient compared?

Generally, the fuel consumption of a hybrid car is 15% to 50% lesser than that of a conventional car, depending on the type of hybrid you drive.

As for Honda Civic e:HEV RS, it uses the most advanced hybrid technology that boasts a fuel efficiency of 4L/100km, which is more efficient than many cars in the market. That’s a lot of money saved!

Can HEV cars offer a powerful driving experience?

Most HEVs aren’t known for their driving performance. In the case of the Honda Civic e:HEV RS however, it’s a different story. Thanks to its 2.0L e:HEV powertrain and 315Nm of torque, you can expect nothing short of an exciting ride through the maximum power output.

Along with that, the car also comes in a sporty sleek interior fitting for any car enthusiast.
