Jim Carrey’s return to Hollywood has been a refreshing experience. After stepping away from the limelight, the actor says the break gave him a fresh perspective on his career.
The 62-year-old star shared with E! News in an exclusive interview, how taking a break, even from something he loved, allowed him to gain a new appreciation for it. “Whenever you step away from something, even if it’s something you love, you get a new appreciation for it,” he said, reflecting on his time away.
Carrey, known for his comedic roles, also mentioned how he never takes himself “too seriously,” which made the time off even more enjoyable. "I like getting out of people's faces," he admitted. "Some people just want to be in people's faces all the time, and I don't, so I like to give them a rest."
Despite his absence, Carrey expressed gratitude for his loyal fans, acknowledging their continued support. "I appreciate it. I'm gratified by it," he added.
In his return to the big screen for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey explained there was a practical reason for his decision to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik. "I bought a lot of stuff," he joked to the Associated Press. "I need the money, frankly."
This revelation came two years after Carrey announced his semi-retirement from acting. In March 2022, he told Access Hollywood that he would only return to acting if the right project came along, saying, "If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink... I might continue down the road." At the time, he was enjoying a quieter life, focusing on painting and his spiritual journey, saying, “I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
