Josh Hartnett is offering fans a sneak peek into his take on the mysterious world of Verity, the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s hit thriller.

Fight or Flight star—who plays Jeremy, a central and controversial figure in Verity—opened up to E! News at the premiere of his new movie on May 6, ahead of its May 9 release. While many readers debate whether Jeremy is the villain of the story, Hartnett sees it differently.
“It’s kind of a perspective thing,” he said. “You could go either way with it. I think it depends on who you listen to.” And according to Hartnett, Verity author Colleen Hoover has weighed in herself. “If you listen to Colleen, it’s not,” he added with a smile.
The film, which also stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, marks the third Hoover novel to hit the big screen following It Ends With Us and the upcoming Regretting You. Hartnett shared that he was drawn to the project by Hathaway, who is also producing the movie.
“Annie and I had talked about working together before,” he said. “So when this came along, I was like, ‘Yeah, of course. I really want to work with you.’”
As for Johnson, Hartnett was equally impressed. “She’s fantastic,” he said of his co-star, who plays one of his love interests in the twisted tale.
With the movie set to release next May, fans will have to wait to see how Hartnett brings Jeremy to life—and whether audiences view him as hero or villain. In the meantime, the Penny Dreadful alum is excited for fans to see his newest role as mercenary Lucas Reyes in Fight or Flight.
“I’ve always tried to do interesting roles that people are going to want to see in theaters,” he said. “This one and the others I’ve done recently feel very in the zeitgeist. It’s been exciting for me.”
