Nearly five years after Naya Rivera’s tragic drowning, Ryan Dorsey is opening up about the heartbreaking guilt their son Josey still carries.

In a recent interview, Ryan shared that Josey—who was just four years old when his mother passed—believes he didn’t do enough to save her.

“Something he’s said over and over is that he tried to find a life raft, and there was a rope,” Ryan told People in an interview. “But there was a big spider on it, and he was too scared to throw it. I keep reassuring him, ‘Buddy, that rope wasn’t long enough.’”
Ryan, who described Naya’s passing as a “freak occurrence,” believes his ex-wife may have been caught in brush or a sudden undercurrent at the lake. He admitted that had Josey also been lost that day, he’s not sure how he would have gone on.
Despite the pain, Ryan sees so much of Naya in their son.

“He’s definitely his mama’s son,” the Big Sky actor shared. “He likes to talk and doesn’t know a stranger. He is such a happy kid.”
Though the loss remains heavy, Ryan continues to honor Naya’s memory by supporting Josey through his grief—reminding him that he did all he could.
