A new survey reveals that 1 in 50 men believe they could outrun a racehorse in a 100-meter sprint. The study, which was commissioned ahead of the Grand National, also highlights that men are more likely to overestimate their abilities when it comes to racing against animals.

According to the research, 27% of men think they could beat a crocodile in a sprint, while 20% believe they could outrun an elephant. Surprisingly, 11% of respondents are confident they could sprint faster than a house cat over 10 meters, even if the cat catches up before the finish line.
Women, however, were more likely to admit they would lose a race to animals, with fewer believing they could outrun a creature. A spokesperson for Freebets.com, who commissioned the study, noted, "It’s interesting to see so many people — especially men — who think they could outrun a horse, even though the fastest horses can reach speeds of over 40 mph, far faster than Usain Bolt's top speed of 27.78 mph."
The study also found that 11% of participants thought they could complete the entire Grand National course, which spans 4 miles and 514 yards, in under 10 minutes. The current course record is 8 minutes and 47 seconds, set by Mr. Frisk in 1990.

Nearly 3 in 10 adults (28%) admitted to thinking they could outrun an animal at some point. Among those who tested their speed, 11% had raced dogs (61%), cats (26%), and goats (19%). While 60% said they were soundly beaten, 26% considered themselves winners, and 14% claimed the race ended in a draw.
The survey also found that 22% of respondents felt they could lift a chimpanzee, despite them weighing up to 60 kg, and 18% were confident they could win an arm-wrestling match with one. Men were especially confident, with 26% believing they could outmuscle a chimp compared to just 11% of women.
While the study highlights people's competitive spirit, the Freebets.com spokesperson reminded participants that animals are often much faster and stronger than humans. "Whether it’s outrunning a cheetah or wrestling a bear, we tend to overestimate our abilities and underestimate the sheer power of animals."
