Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, died from complications related to diabetes mellitus, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed. Her death was ruled as natural following a review of lab results.

Trachtenberg was found unresponsive in her New York apartment on February 26 and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was 39. Authorities initially listed the cause of death as “undetermined” after her family objected to an autopsy. Reports also indicated she had undergone a liver transplant prior to her death.
Tributes poured in from fans and former colleagues. Rosie O'Donnell, her Harriet the Spy co-star, expressed her grief, saying, “She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped.” Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played her sister on Buffy, shared an emotional quote from the show, writing, “I love you. I will always love you.”
Though she had stepped back from acting in recent years, Trachtenberg had been working on a screenplay adaptation of Toy Monster: The Big, Bad World of Mattel. Her collaborator Casey Tebo is now committed to bringing her script to life in her memory.
