Nirvana made a triumphant return on Friday night, but with a twist — Post Malone stepped in as the band's new vocalist, filling Kurt Cobain’s iconic shoes for an unforgettable performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. The concert, held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, featured the band’s surviving members — bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl, and guitarist Pat Smear — alongside Malone, who not only sang but also played guitar during the explosive set.

Comedian Adam Sandler, who was part of the Saturday Night Live cast when Nirvana first graced the stage in 1991, introduced the legendary group. “These next guys played while my cast was there, and it was an explosive moment for all of us,” Sandler shared. “It changed everything. Three guys rocking out in a way no one had ever seen before, led by a young badass who we will never forget. But the music will live on forever. Ladies and gentlemen: Post Nirvana.”
Grohl has been a regular guest on SNL since, performing with his band Foo Fighters. The surviving members of Nirvana — Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear — also reunited with Paul McCartney on SNL in 2012 for a special performance of “Cut Me Some Slack,” a song they wrote with McCartney.
Malone, a lifelong Nirvana fan, has long expressed his admiration for the band. Over the years, he’s covered several Nirvana songs, including “Lithium” at Coachella in 2016 and “All Apologies” in 2017. In 2020, Malone performed a full set of Nirvana covers during a livestream for COVID-19 relief, including “Heart-Shaped Box,” “Drain You,” and “Something in the Way.” The band’s bassist, Novoselic, praised Malone’s performance on social media in real-time, writing, “So proud of @PostMalone and crew. I don’t think these fellows can play any better. They are on fire!!!!”

Courtney Love, Cobain’s widow, also showed her support for Malone’s Nirvana covers, writing on social media, “GOOSEBUMPS! F--- YES. Go have a margarita, @postmalone. Nothing but love from here.”
In other Nirvana-related news, Novoselic, Grohl, and Smear recently reunited at the FireAid concert in Los Angeles, where they performed several Nirvana tracks, including “Breed” with St. Vincent, “School” with Kim Gordon, and “Territorial Pissings” with Joan Jett. The trio also ended the set with “All Apologies,” featuring vocals from Grohl’s 18-year-old daughter, Violet.
