Reese Witherspoon is setting the record straight on rumors of a falling out with Kate Winslet.
Speculation swirled online after Witherspoon mentioned in a recent interview that a “very serious, proper actress” had cut ties with her following a playful roast at an awards show. Fans quickly connected the dots, assuming she was referring to Winslet, given their past appearances together, including a memorable moment at the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards.
But Witherspoon was quick to shut down the chatter.
“Hey guys… just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W,” Witherspoon wrote on her Instagram Stories. “We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out.”
She also addressed a headline claiming she roasted Winslet at the 2007 BAFTAs. “This is so completely UNTRUE,” the Legally Blonde star responded, calling the rumors “so silly!”
In her earlier interview, Witherspoon recalled the mishap that sparked the misunderstanding—but was careful not to name names. She described an awkward moment when she accidentally roasted an actress while presenting her with an award.
“I thought it was like a roast,” Witherspoon told People. “I got up and I roasted her. I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it.”
Witherspoon added that the actress in question stopped speaking to her after that. “We’re not friends anymore. I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny… but I had the wrong audience.”
Despite the mix-up, Witherspoon wants fans to know that her bond with Winslet is stronger than ever—and the internet gossip doesn’t hold up.
