Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister (2003–2009), passed away at 7:10 PM on Monday at the National Heart Institute (IJN), Kuala Lumpur. Throughout his leadership, he was credited with several key accomplishments that shaped the nation’s progress.

Here are six of his most notable achievements:
1. Landslide Victory in the 2004 General Election
In the 2004 General Election—his first as Prime Minister—Barisan Nasional secured 198 out of 220 parliamentary seats. This overwhelming win was seen as a strong mandate for his leadership and policies, including the promotion of Islam Hadhari, which emphasized the compatibility of Islam with economic growth and technological advancement.
2. Economic Development Initiatives
Abdullah spearheaded the launch of five major Malaysian Economic Corridors:
- Iskandar Malaysia
- Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER)
- East Coast Economic Region (ECER)
- Sabah Development Corridor (SDC)
- Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE)
These initiatives aimed to drive regional development and boost the country’s economic competitiveness. He also prioritized the agricultural sector to narrow the income gap between urban and rural areas, promoting more inclusive economic growth.
3. Combating Corruption
Under his leadership, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was established alongside the Special Taskforce to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH). These efforts were part of a broader strategy to strengthen government transparency and integrity in both public and private sectors.
4. Human Capital Development
Abdullah was fondly remembered as the “Father of Human Capital Development” for introducing various policies to enhance Malaysia’s talent and workforce capacity. His administration placed significant emphasis on education and skills development to build a knowledge-based economy.
5. Recognition of the Halal Industry
During his tenure, Malaysia’s halal industry ecosystem was significantly strengthened, positioning the country as a global leader in the sector. In recognition of his contributions, Abdullah was posthumously awarded the National Halal Development Figure Award in 2024.
6. Open and Consultative Leadership Style
Abdullah was known for his more transparent and inclusive approach to governance—an approach that marked a shift from his predecessor. He encouraged stakeholder engagement in policy-making and national planning while upholding development goals such as Vision 2020.
