Sarah Michelle Gellar marked what would have been Shannen Doherty’s 54th birthday with a heartfelt tribute, sharing never-before-seen moments from their final birthday celebration together in 2024. The two longtime friends had a tradition of celebrating their birthdays side by side, and last year’s gathering became their last before Doherty’s passing in July.

“For as long as I can remember, we have celebrated our birthdays together,” Gellar wrote on Instagram. “This year I will keep that tradition, and celebrate you.” She shared photos and a video of the two blowing out candles on their cakes, remembering the moment as bittersweet.
Doherty, best known for her roles on Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210, died after a lengthy battle with cancer. First diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, she went into remission before the disease returned in 2020. Gellar and her family became especially close with Doherty’s during the COVID-19 pandemic, forming a “COVID pod” that gave both families much-needed comfort and support.

“You gave my children such a life in COVID,” Gellar had told Doherty on her Let’s Be Clear podcast months before her death. “You opened your home in a way I will always be grateful for.” Doherty, who was immunocompromised, said the bond helped her feel less isolated.
After Doherty’s passing, Gellar posted a moving message about their 30-year friendship, saying, “It only hurts this much because there was so much love.” She also encouraged fans to honor Doherty by supporting animal shelters and causes close to her heart.
“Even just cuddling or walking a shelter dog would make our girl happy,” Gellar wrote, “and probably spark that deep, throaty laugh we all loved.”
