Sometimes, achieving your lifetime dream does not only depend on how hard we work, it also depends on who acknowledges it.

Phu Joon Meng, who is studying at the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) got a pleasant surprise when the university decided to award him a special degree!

The Sarawakian student was unable to complete his exams due to his illness but he was indeed a very determined and hardworking student, said UCTS .

The 23-year old’s Bachelor’s degree was in quantity surveying under special provisions, also known as an aegrotat degree.

It was the first time the university had conferred an aegrotat degree!

Phu joined the quantity surveying programme in April 2017 and is also a black belt instructor at the university’s Taekwondo club.

After being diagnosed with a brain tumour in May 2019, he was forced to defer his studies to undergo necessary treatment. He went for surgery in June and was able to resume his studies in February this year.

However, things took a turn for the worst for Phu when the doctors gave up on treatment, saying that the cancer has spread to other parts of his body.

His only treatment is to live the rest of his days to the fullest.

Phu expressed his gratitude to his university for recognizing his efforts and said that he’s now focusing on spending quality time with his parents and brother while he still can. We wish you all the best in creating beautiful memories, Phu. We’re so proud that you’re taking everything with a very positive mindset.

You’re a fighter!
