It’s been six years since Natasha Romanoff made her ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, but Scarlett Johansson is still reminding fans that Black Widow’s story is over.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?" Johansson firmly stated in a recent interview with InStyle. Despite her insistence, speculation about the character’s possible return continues to circulate among Marvel fans. "They just don't want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’" she added.
Natasha’s fate was sealed when she traded her life for the Soul Stone, ensuring the Avengers could undo Thanos’ devastating snap. For Johansson, her character’s sacrifice was a crucial moment in the MCU, and reversing it would diminish its significance.
"We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment," the actress explained.

Johansson has long defended Black Widow’s ending, previously stating that Natasha’s choice to give her life was a defining moment for her character. In Avengers: Endgame, she finally took control of her own fate, showcasing her growth and self-worth in a powerful way.
While Black Widow (2021) gave fans a deeper look into Natasha’s past and introduced Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova as her successor, some still refuse to believe they’ve seen the last of the original Black Widow—especially with the MCU’s multiverse now in play.

Marvel fans have learned to be skeptical, given past denials from actors like Andrew Garfield before his surprise return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. And with Avengers: Doomsday set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, speculation about unexpected character comebacks is running high.
Johansson isn’t alone in shutting down rumors. Chris Evans has also denied any plans to reprise his role as Captain America, telling Esquire that he’s "happily retired" from the MCU. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. is making his return—not as Iron Man, but as Avengers: Doomsday’s main villain, Victor von Doom.
Despite the rumors, Johansson remains firm: Natasha Romanoff’s journey has ended, and she deserves to rest.
