We’ve seen memes of people wanting to sell their kidneys to own the latest gadgets and this teengar in China really did it, but let’s just say the outcome of his decision is not very favourable.

Wang Shangkun, who was then 17 years old, sold one of his kidneys on the black market in exchange for an iPhone. He was on the internet when he received a message from an organ harvester in an online chatroom. He was influenced to sell his kidney for 20,000 yuan (about RM 12,512).

Of course without telling his parents, he underwent the illegal surgery in the central Hunan province. Following the surgery, he bought an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. The surgery was reportedly done by doctors who were employed at local hospitals.

Upon returning home with his new devices, Wang’s mother grew suspicious as to where he would have gotten all the money from, since they come from a very poor family. The teenager finally admitted his doings to his mothers and the rest was history.

Wang, now in his mid-twenties, has developed an infection in his remaining kidney and has to undergo dialysis on a daily basis. His condition is believed to have been caused by the unsanitary location of the operation and the lack of post-operative care. Suffering from renal deficiency, he has to now undergo the dialysis to clear his blood of the toxins from the remaining kidney.

Following the details of the trade, nine people were reportedly arrested and Wang’s family was given about $300,000 in compensation.

No amount of money is worth someone’s health, so let’s not risk our lives to the materialistic world.

We hope Wang learnt his lesson and that he gets better soon!
