Our 33 women MP’s across the political divide have urged their male counterparts to be more gender sensitive to make Parliament a world class institution.
All of them feel a gender-sensitive Dewan Rakyat is crucial to meeting the needs and interests of every man and woman.
In a joint statement, they vowed to focus on bills and policies that move towards gender equality and hold debates that reflect gender sensitivity.
Among the MPs are Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Parit Sulong MP Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, Pandan MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Batang Lupar MP Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto.
This is in conjunction with International Women’s Day today.
Meanwhile, the Raja Permaisuri Agong has called on Malaysians to appreciate, love, respect and be caring towards women.
The Queen says the Covid-19 pandemic has shown the strength of women who are able to rise and withstand challenges.
On the other hand, former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says women still face the challenge of gender bias, but they now have to also face the challenges of the new norms in relation to conventional roles.
She told MalaysiaKini that for most working mums, working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic generally means balancing a career, while looking after the husband who is also working from home, and caring for children who are studying from home.
Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah also called on homemakers to adapt to change to be technologically advanced to help and monitor their children.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day celebration is #ChooseToChallenge.
