Terengganu reports 700% surge in HFMD cases
May 12, 2022
Terengganu has recorded a staggering 700% spike in hand, foot, and mouth disease cases.
Its health department says there were over 780 cases since the start of this year, compared to just 95 cases in the same period last year.
Most of the cases involved children aged 6 and below in nurseries.
It says investigations found that the outbreak was due to a lack of hygiene at such premises.
As such, the department has urged all nursery and childcare centre operators to do more to improve hygiene levels, as a precaution against the spread of the disease.

Rising temperatures and haze expected to hit Malaysia from July to Sept
Weather experts expect a rise in temperature, along with the haze phenomenon, to hit Malaysia from July to September.
The Met Department says there is a high possibility of forest fires in neighbouring countries due to the hot spell, with winds blowing from the south-west, bringing in smoke into the country.
It had earlier issued a statement regarding the south-west monsoon, which is expected to begin this Saturday and continue until mid-September.
This means the formation of fewer rain clouds causing most areas in the country to go longer without rain, and low rainfall distribution.

Home Minister says only certain people can have police escorts
Only certain individuals are allowed to have police escorts.
The Home Minister says they are individuals on a special list, or those with permission from the IGP.
He says the matter had been agreed in Parliament adding that anyone found abusing the use of escorts and outriders will be investigated.
He was commenting on a viral case, in which a Parliament member’s son was allegedly escorted by two outriders in Penang recently.
