Mandatory Death Penalty Bill Passed
Apr 03, 2023
The Dewan Rakyat has passed a bill to abolish the mandatory death sentence.
This means that once it officially becomes law, judges will be given the discretion on whether to impose the death penalty for the relevant offences.
The alternative sentence is a jail term of up to 40 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
The Law and Institutional Reform deputy minister stressed that this is NOT the total abolishment of the death penalty.
It will remain in the books for 11 offences.
