Jan 18, 2024

the verdict for msia's first stalking trial

A suspect accused of stalking a woman for 8 years will be detained at a mental hospital indefinitely.

This is after a court in Shah Alam found him not guilty, on grounds of insanity.

He was ordered to be sent to a healthcare facility in Perak, where he will undergo treatment for schizophrenia.

The 37-year-old was the first person to go on trial under Malaysia's new anti-stalking law.

Had he been convicted, he would have faced a maximum penalty of 3 years jail and a fine.

Separately, KL police say they are probing a possible stalking case in Mont Kiara.

This is after a woman lodged a report, claiming that she was followed by an unknown individual in the area.

The government is in the early stages of drafting a law to protect consumers who buy defective cars.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister says currently it's studying international practices, for the so-called lemon law.

Its minister told FMT that in the meantime, there are consumer laws that offer some form of protection for vehicle buyers.

This, following recent cases of Malaysians buying defective vehicles.
