The government has agreed in principle to allow some prisoners to serve their sentences at home, to help reduce congestion in prisons.

The Home Minister says the planned home detention will involve inmates sentenced to jail terms of 4 years or less.

It's especially aimed at those who suffer from chronic illnesses, as well as the disabled, senior citizens, and pregnant women.

Authorities will monitor the activities of home detention prisoners, with the use of gadgets like ankle bracelets.

It will also keep tabs on sectors that maintain the old 6% rate, such as food and beverages.
